I am a Death Doula, still under training but insured to practise with End of Life Doula UK, who will provide a mentor for me when I have a client for my own well being and for advice. If someone has a terminal diagnosis and would like someone to accompany them on their journey to death, then I can walk with them. If anyone wants to talk about death in general even if in very good health then I am happy to talk about death. To quote from my training ‘we work in an open hearted way to create an atmosphere of loving support, kindness, respect, dignity and normality for all concerned. We aim to help people feel safer and more at peace with death and dying, giving guidance, confidence and support in any way it is needed.’ I am not there to replace a health professional but to work alongside them. From making a cuppa to holding the space, I can volunteer my service.
Personally I feel that no one should die alone unless they want to and to that end I started my training. I feel called to those who have no one else in their lives for whatever reason but maybe don’t want to do this final journey alone. Or just need some company and guidance as they negotate their way.
