I am a skilled and experienced counsellor, supporting adults, couples and young people (18+) since 2012. I see clients in central Exeter and from my home in Bradninch.
I am primarily a relational counsellor, using attunement, warmth and compassion within the therapeutic relationship to create a safe container, which supports the client as they explore their thoughts, feelings and patterns of behaviours. I am both attachment- and trauma-informed in my practice.
I work with an integrative approach that draws on Gestalt, Systemic theory, Transactional Analysis and Psychodynamic principles. I also draw on Polyvagal Theory and basic neuroscience concepts to develop clients’ understanding of their brain and nervous system responses. I believe it is vital to support the client to develop a somatic awareness of their body, in order to help them develop better resources for mental wellbeing, and I teach effective tools for self-soothing and emotional regulation that serve to bring the client back to connection with self and others.
A past tutor described me as “an extremely advanced practitioner in terms of her understanding around trauma, bonding and attachment. She has exemplary professional standards, and is both an empathic and safe practitioner. I believe Paula to be a naturally skilled counsellor with a high level of expertise.”
